METRO Unveils its First Solar Photovoltaic Plant in China

METRO Unveils its First Solar Photovoltaic Plant in China Trapped on Mars with no wind and oil, Mark Watney, the star of the newly-released blockbuster “The Martian,” has won the admiration of audiences in China for his brilliant use of innovative technology. In the film, Watney uses solar panels to charge his vehicle, enabling the intrepid astronaut to drive 3,200 kilometers to the rescue point. Despite its science fiction role, solar photovoltaic technology is not new: METRO China, the world’s leading B2B wholesaler, has recently launched its own solar photovoltaic program, bringing this innovative technology to its customers.

Shanghai, China, 16 December 2015 – METRO China today announced the launch of a solar photovoltaic (PV) plant in the wholesaler’s Shanghai Putuo store, making the store one of the first commercial hypermarkets equipped with a solar PV system in China. The plant will generate 370,000 kWh of electricity annually, producing 20 percent of the store’s total electricity. The plant is part of METRO Group’s second solar PV program worldwide, and is the first of its kind in Asia.

“As a responsible corporate citizen, METRO is deeply committed to sustainability, which is one of our core competitive advantages,” said Mr. Jeroen de Groot, President of METRO China. “We take environmental protection very seriously and are making every effort to integrate sustainable practices throughout our entire corporate operations. The solar program, and the safe, clean energy it produces, will help us reduce our use of fossil fuels and minimize our environmental impact, enabling METRO to continue fulfilling our commitment to our customers and society as a whole.”

METRO built its first PV plant at a METRO store in Düsseldorf, Germany in 2008. Today, METRO’s Putuo store features 2,800 solar panels with a capacity of 350 KW covering the 2,630.6 square meter-roof. Once installed, the Solar Power system will last more than 20 years, reducing the Putuo store’s carbon emissions by 909 tons. Provided by a global brand and made in Germany, the CIGS thin film solar panels are able to generate electricity all year round regardless of air quality, due to their high luminescent efficiency, even in low light environments. An electronic screen set at the entrance of the Putuo store will indicate the amount of electricity generated in real time.

Environmentally-friendly Practices, Guided by the Principle of Green Operation

Ever since METRO entered the China market in 1996, the wholesaler has been pioneering environmental protection. This September, METRO China released its first sustainable development report, sharing its 20 years of experience in sustainability. True to its principle of “Green Operations,” METRO has implemented numerous energy conservation programs, including the Energy Saving Project (ESP). As part of the project, METRO will invest 120 million RMB in replacing lighting in all its stores with LED solutions by 2020, aiming to fully control energy consumption. METRO has also launched the Energy Awareness Program (EAP) to track the energy consumption of METRO China stores and headquarters. METRO will use this data to set attainable energy saving goals.

METRO has also initiated a comprehensive maintenance program for the industrial refrigeration and air-conditioning systems in its stores. This program has reduced the leakage rate of cooling agents by 40 percent, significantly decreasing overall energy consumption. Additionally, METRO opened its first store featuring carbon dioxide refrigeration technology in Weifang in 2014, aiming to further cut greenhouse gas emissions and lower operational costs. Compared with traditional refrigeration methods, carbon dioxide refrigeration technology does not deplete the ozone layer, making it safer than other refrigerants. The technology is also more efficient, and will reduce the energy consumption of the cooling system by as much as 20 percent. With a total investment of 500 million RMB, METRO plans to upgrade the cooling agent system to CO2 refrigeration in all stores by 2019.

Commitment to CSR and Sustainable Development

METRO believes that sustainability creates both value and new business opportunities. Moving forward with its strategy for sustainable development, METRO will transform Dongguan Store to a green store, continuing to provide customers in China with safe, environmentally-friendly wholesale solutions that integrate green management and green shopping advocacy. METRO will also introduce a “Zero Emission” shopping mall, minimizing energy emissions and continuing its mission to realize long-term prospects for prosperity through innovative technologies.
